چکیده

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is becoming a very affordable and reliable way of to track inventory items. Because of this, RFID systems have received considerable attention from researchers, engineers and industry personnel. Particularly, researchers involved with RFID systems have developed smaller antennas for tags deployed in these systems. Several of these designs have involved meander-line antennas (Finkenzeller, 2003), metamaterialbased designs (Dacuna & Pous, 2007) and various materials (Griffin et. al., 2006). This chapter will describe the main parameters of interest in a RFID system using Friis’s transmission equation. This will then be followed by a section on recent work on applying RFID systems to smart shelves, metallic plates and livestock tracking. Then a section on coplanar-waveguides (CPW) is presented followed by the design of metamaterial-based CPW antennas for passive UHF RFID tags.

Design of Passive UHF RFID Tag Antennas Using Metamaterial-Based Structures and Techniques

Metamaterials (Marques et al., 2008; Eleftheriades & Balmain, 2005; Herraiz-Martinez et al. 2009) are one of the many new technologies being adopted to improve the performance of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems (Finkenzeller, 2003; Stupf et al., 2007). In particular, metamaterial-based antenna designs are being used more frequently to improve the read range and reduce the size of ...

Compact Metamaterial-Based UHF RFID Antennas: Deformed Omega and Split-Ring Resonator Structures

Over the past decade, researchers have shown significant advances in the area of radio frequency identification (RFID) and metamaterials. RFID is being applied to a wide spectrum of industries and metamaterial-based antennas are beginning to perform just as well as existing larger printed antennas. This paper presents two novel metamaterial-based antennas for passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) ...

Design of a Zeroth Order Resonator UHF RFID Passive Tag Antenna with Capacitive Loaded Coplanar Waveguide Structures

The use and development of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems has undergone substantial growth in the past decade in many new areas. Some of these areas include wire‐ less sensor systems, metamaterials and compact antennas [1-8]. However, much of this new growth has required more performance from traditional passive RFID systems. In particu‐ lar, the need for more compact antennas wi...

Design of Space-Filling Antennas for Passive UHF RFID Tags

Every year researchers and engineers are finding new and useful applications for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems (Finkenzeller, 2003). Because of the growing use of RFID systems, many different areas of research have also been developed to improve the performance of such systems. A few of these areas of research include novel antenna designs (Rao et at., 2005; Calabrese & Marrocco...

Design Analysis and Performance Comparison of Microstrip and CPW Antenna at UHF Band

Microwave-frequency signals are conveyed by using the Microstrip antennas. It is capable of dual and triple frequency operations and has light weight and low cost. Similarly, larger bandwidth can be achieved by Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) structure. Gain can be enhanced using the Defected Ground Structure (DGS). This paper presents the performance comparison of the design of a microstrip antenna a...
